Sunscreen Recommendations
As summer approaches, sun protection is an essential component of enjoying the warmer weather. To maximize Vitamin D absorption, stay in the sun for 15-20 minutes without sunscreen. After that, utilize a skin and reef-safe (mineral-based!) sunscreen. Babies have more sensitive skin and should use baby-specific sunscreen, found here. Badger, Blue Lizard, and Tallow Tots are among the safe and effective mineral sunscreens we recommend. Badger is available through Fullscript, and Blue Lizard and Tallow Tots can be purchased directly from their sites.
Many drugstore sunscreens contain unstable and harmful agents such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, and octisalate. These ingredients can penetrate the skin and have systemic effects on the body.
Our bodies are particularly vulnerable to toxins when the weather is warm since heat opens up our skin pores and increases our absorption of toxins. Using a mineral sunscreen gives you protection from the sun without trading it in for small doses of toxins. If an oxybenzone sunscreen is all that is available to you on a given day, increase water and antioxidant intake to combat the potential exposure.
